The School of Chemistry of the University of Bristol is seeking to appoint an open ended fixed funding for a Research Technician. The post-holder will contribute to research by applying pre-agreed analytical approaches to biogeochemically characterise archaeological and modern samples. The post holder will also provide technical support in the routine running of laboratory operations including the use of specialised equipment, risk assessment, safe handling, storage and waste disposal of chemicals. The role holder will fully support research laboratory activities, ensuring that the laboratories are prepared for experimentation and are compliant with relevant Health and Safety and other legislative or policy requirements. They will carry out specialised techniques (including GC, GC-MS, HT-GC-MS, GC-C-IRMS and GC-TC-IRMS) and train others in these and essential core functions.

Zooarchaeology is an essential part of research and teaching at Groningen Institute of Archaeology. A large skeletal reference collection, fully functioning maceration lab, an x-ray machine, microscopes, collagen preparation facilities are available for research. The collections are open to third parties (e.g. commercial zooarchaeologists). Research activities focus on the Holocene with a cross-regional approach that spans from the northern Netherlands to Sri Lanka focusing on the impact of human social systems on ecosystem roles of fauna. Recent research projects includes SeaChanges International Marie-Curie network, NWO Emergence of Animal Husbandry in the Netherlands project, Gordion Archaeological Project, Kerkenes Archaeological Project, among others. The main tasks within the function are: analyzing faunal remains in Groningen and abroad during fieldwork (e.g. in the Middle East); sampling zooarchaeological remains for destructive analysis (e.g. stable isotope analysis); extracting collagen for instrumental analyses (e.g. zooarchaeology by mass spectrometry); supporting and organizing teaching and training activities in zooarchaeology; physical and digital care and development of the collections, laboratory space, and the maceration unit; maceration of animal carcasses using existing facilities.

The School of Archaeology is looking to recruit a Chemistry Technician to join our small and friendly team in The Research Laboratory for Archaeology -Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit (ORAU), based in the centre of Oxford. The lab provides about 2,000 radiocarbon dates each year for our own research and for collaborators across archaeological, environmental and forensic sciences. This post is a fixed-term contract for 3 years with possibility to be renewed, depending on funding. It is a full-time position. Reporting to the Lab Manager, you will mainly work on samples submitted to the laboratory as part of collaborations and commercial contracts but work may also include some method development and research. Much of the material you will be working on is irreplaceable and so the work needs to be carried out methodically and with a suitable sense of responsibility. You will be able to cope with repetitive tasks on a daily / weekly basis in a timely manner.

At the Rijksmuseum, we are engaged in leading research into our own collection on a daily basis. To uncover the provenance of an object for instance, or the materials it is made of. As a Research Scientist specialised in microscopy and spectroscopy you will carry out scientific research into the smallest elements of art. A challenging role that allows you to build bridges between natural science, art and the general public. Your task will be to find out more about the material composition and evolution of iconic pieces in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. Initially, much of your time will be dedicated to “The Night Watch” by Rembrandt. You will make use of techniques like light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy combined with elemental analysis, Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron-based techniques. As well as doing research, you will also be looking after the equipment in the Rijksmuseum. You will always work closely together with restoration and conservation staff and fellow natural scientists.
