The Competence Center of Cultural Heritage Digitization at Fraunhofer IGD develops and automates 3D scanning technologies to allow for automatic 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage and industrial objects. Different acquisition devices are used depending on the object properties and quality requirements. For the high-precision measurement of small objects, a laser triangulation scanner has been developed and mounted on a precision actuator. As part of this position, you will extend the existing software for this system. First, you will familiarize yourself with the existing scanning system and the topic of laser scanning, and get to know the software in use. One of your goals will be to improve the scanner’s accuracy and develop methods to avoid, for example, reflections and overexposed areas. You will also develop optimized workflows that can handle highly glossy objects. You will evaluate the results in terms of accuracy, robustness, and runtime on representative datasets and iteratively improve both the setup and the algorithms.
