The Competence Center of Cultural Heritage Digitization at Fraunhofer IGD develops and automates 3D scanning technologies to allow for automatic 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage and industrial objects. Different acquisition devices are used depending on the object properties and quality requirements. A new robot-based multi-sensor platform will combine the existing technologies to enable a capture quality superior to that of the individual systems. First, you will delve deeper into stereo capture and laser triangulation, becoming familiar with a specialized depth camera and its output data structure. You will extend this setup with a laser line to capture geometry with higher local precision. Building on this, you will perform a full system calibration and develop algorithms to fuse both methods. For example, the fusion may use the coarse 3D model from stereo reconstruction as a starting point for planning high resolution laser scans. You will evaluate the results for accuracy, robustness, and runtime on representative datasets and iteratively improve both the setup and the algorithms.
