This position is in the Scientific Research (CL-SR) department of the National Gallery of Art. The CL-SR department is responsible for providing analytical services and conducting research to advance our understanding of artists' materials and techniques, improve approaches to preserving works of art, and develop innovative scientific procedures and methodologies for the field. The primary purpose of the Imaging Scientist position is to provide the services and research above. As the Physical Scientist, you will: The incumbent will evaluate requests for analysis from conservators, curators, and conservation scientists and determine what requests can be aided using imaging spectroscopy. They will conduct the data collection using one or more imaging spectroscopy modalities on a work of art or conservation materials, performing necessary data analyses, combining the results with those from other relevant scientific studies, and documenting the findings and conclusions in written internal reports; The incumbent will work with the supervisor and other imaging scientists to maintain and develop new spectroscopic imaging modalities to answer conservation or art historical questions from conservators and curators. The incumbent will write co-authored scholarly publications focused on the results from scientific analysis conducted, give lectures, and contribute to content for the National Gallery of Art's website; The incumbent will train conservators and scientists in the use of spectral imaging instrumentation and related site-specific spectral instruments.
