This position is in the Scientific Research (CL-SR) department of the National Gallery of Art. The primary purpose of the Conservation Scientist position is to support the mission of the CL-SR department by applying scientific expertise to analyze and investigate art-related materials, contribute to the development of conservation strategies, and push the boundaries of scientific knowledge in the context of art preservation. As the Physical Scientist you will: Evaluate requests for analysis from conservators, conservation scientists and curators and recommend appropriate chromatographic/separation techniques and may also include microscopy, imaging, or spectroscopic methods; Act as lead scientist to undertake analyses, using a variety of skills in chromatographic methods, and as required, microscopy, spectroscopy, or other types of analysis.
