The intern will gain experience in performing scientific analysis on items from the BL’s collections and working in a lab-based environment, including processing and preparing samples, designing and executing laboratory testing, making observations and interpreting findings. They will also learn how to make analysis decisions for a range of collection items and gain an understanding of the ethical and practical considerations that this involves. The successful candidate will have gained some knowledge of both the theoretical and practical aspects of the conservation science profession, and will possess a high level of manual dexterity and good attention to detail. They will be highly motivated with good written and verbal communication skills. The intern will be based in the British Library Centre for Conservation (BLCC) within the conservation team and will be supervised by the Lead conservation scientist, who will actively monitor and discuss work on a regular basis. Additional requirements (desirable): Experience of analysis of materials from museum collections or similar; Evidence of experience in the use of analytical techniques, such as microscopy, FTIR, XRF, MSI, FORS or any instrument related to the study of museum collections.
