The scientific Research (CL-SR) department of the National Gallery of Art is responsible for analysis and research relating to identification and characterization of materials used by artists and conservators and of artworks in the collection. The incumbent applies scientific skills to the analysis of artwork using a variety of techniques and technologies. As the Museum Specialist (Art), you will: Evaluate requests for analysis from conservators and curators and recommend appropriate analytical procedures; Initiate and collaborate on research projects within the conservation division related to conservation materials, works of art, or methods development in instrumental analysis of art or conservation treatment or preservation studies; Act as lead scientist to undertake analyses, using a variety of skills in spectroscopy and other types of analysis and coordinates staff necessary to perform the analyses.
