Our Egypt and Sudan department are seeking a Curator to curate the collection of human remains held in the British Museum, provide advice on ‘best practice’ protocols for the care of human remains across the collection and research specific aspects of the human remains collection (particularly those from the Nile Valley). This is a unique opportunity to enhance the documentation of the human remains in the Museum, whilst conducting a programme of scholarly research, including collaborative research projects with external institutions. You will act as an advocate for the Museum specifically on, but not limited to, issues relating to the holding and curation of human remains. Educated to MA/MSc level (or equivalent; PhD desirable) in biological anthropology or bioarchaeology, specifically relating to the cultures of the Nile Valley, the ideal candidate will have experience of working with and handling skeletal and mummified human remains and Nile Valley collections in a museum environment. Experience of research, fieldwork and publication is essential, including an in-depth knowledge of the latest bioarchaeological and dental anthropological methods. A background in Egyptian and Sundanese material culture and archaeology would be advantageous.
