The ERC Starting Grant LUMIERE focusses on the geochemical analyses of European archaeological human remains dating from the Neolithic to the Early Medieval Period. Traditional isotope systems (C, N, O, Sr) are combined with less common ones (H, S, Nd, Pb) to investigate changes in mobility patterns and landscape use through several thousands of years across Europe. Analytical developments feature at the centre of this project with the aim to increase the isotopic arsenal available for bioarchaeological research.
The LUMIERE Project is based at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in the Research Unit: Analytical, Environmental and Geo-Chemistry (AMGC) where a large analytical arsenal is available (3 IRMS, ICP-MS, FTIR, µXRF) soon to be enhanced with the acquisition of an MC-ICP-MS fully dedicated to this ERC project. This project also received the support of the Maritime Culture Research Institute (MARI) at VUB ensuring the full integration of science and theory.
