The Department of Archaeogenetics at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, Jena, utilizes recent advances in molecular approaches on biomolecules, such as genome wide DNA sequencing, to uncover an entirely new spectrum of information that can be retrieved from sample repositories such as anthropological and archaeological collections. The Molecular Palaeopathology, Computational Pathogenomics, and Transmission, Infection, Diversification and Evolution (TIDE) groups invite applications for a Post-doctoral position in ancient viral genomics with a start date as soon as possible.
Job Description
We seek to fill a position at the post-doctoral level with a focus on the detection and reconstruction of ancient viral genomes from archaeological contexts. Analyses will involve computational detection of ancient viral DNA in large metagenomic datasets with genomic reconstruction, and comparative analyses that will integrate data from extensive collections of modern vial genomes. Data will draw upon archaeological samples from the Late Pleistocene to post-Medieval periods, and will cover a broad geographical expanse, with an emphasis on Eurasian and New World populations. Strong bioinformatics skills and literacy in basic statistical procedures are a requirement. Prior work on viral genomics is an asset. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline (microbiology, biology, bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics, population genetics, etc.) and share an interest in the human past. Competency in delivering oral presentations is an asset, and experience with supervising or mentoring students is desirable. This is a full time two-year (renewable) contract position up to a pay scale of E13 TVöD, in accordance with the German pay grade system for public employees, depending an qualifications.
