The Institute for Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology at Kiel University (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel) invites applications for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher “Statistical Modelling and Computational Archaeology” as part of the ESTER project (Estimating Eurasia’s Prehistoric Population Based on a Large Number of Records). Responsibilities: Implementation and further development of a hierarchical modelling approach for reconstructing prehistoric population dynamics within the project framework; Contribution to the specification and testing of process and observation models for heterogeneous archaeological and palaeoenvironmental proxies (including suitable error/uncertainty models); Support for regionalised modelling approaches (e.g. spatial hierarchies, partial pooling) and their evaluation in the project context; Implementation and optimisation of models for available computational environments (including parallelisation/HPC where required); Collaboration with archaeology- and palaeoenvironment-focused team members to prepare and integrate domain-specific requirements into statistical model components; Analysis and preparation of model outputs (e.g. posterior summaries, uncertainty representations) and support for validation and sensitivity analyses.
