The main goal of this project is to resolve the hominin authorship of the Middle Paleolithic in the Armenian Highlands. Using the well-studied Upper Paleolithic archaeological sequence from Aghitu-3 Cave as a benchmark, the project focuses on re-examining the Late Middle Paleolithic sequence from Yerevan-1 Cave, excavated during the 1960s and 1970s. The scope of work includes opening up the old excavation at Yerevan-1 and sampling the vertical sections in order to conduct geoarchaeological studies, radiometric dating, and analyses involving proteomics (ZooMS), stable isotopic geochemistry and ancient sedimentary DNA. Our research follows a multidisciplinary approach aimed at establishing a robust paleoenvironmental framework during MIS 3 (57-29 ka) to understand the time when Neanderthals went extinct and modern humans occupied the region. We seek a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher with a completed doctoral degree in archaeology, geosciences, or related field, and a strong interest in the transitional period from Middle to Upper Paleolithic in Western Asia. The candidate should be well-versed in conducting multidisciplinary analyses with a solid understanding of at least two of the following areas: radiocarbon dating, proteomics (ZooMS), stable isotope  geochemistry, or ancient sedimentary DNA. Familiarity with zooarchaeology and faunal analysis is useful; experience with field or laboratory work is desirable, as is knowledge of GIS or quantitative data analysis.
