ERC Project PollutedPast, led by Dr. Olalla López-Costas, aims to produce detailed data about human exposure to metal pollution during Roman and Medieval times in Iberia and Scandinavia, and compare with natural archives and contextual information. The team includes researchers of a wide variety of expertise as bioarchaeology, osteoarchaeology, paleography, paleoenvironment, isotope analyses. The project is based at Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and secondarily at Dpt Archaeology and Classical Studies, Stockholm University, Sweden. Main task: to study the connection between animals and metal pollution in Roman and Medieval times. Other tasks: to develop zooarchaeological identification including main paleopathological markers. To understand the connection between the animal characteristics and management strategies including diet and mobility. To address the relationship between metal pollution in animal bones and their environment.
