The PhD Researcher will focus on the investigation of the production, circulation and use of glass in post-Medieval Portugal and other European contexts at large. He/she will pay specific attention to special contexts in which glass was employed, such as alchemical and chemical laboratories, as well as artisanal workshops. In order to achieve these goals, the researcher will travel to museums and archaeological deposits to collect and analyse materials. Whenever possible, he/she will take samples for invasive analysis through optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-Ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), Particle-induced X-ray emission (µ-PIXE) and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The researcher will be responsible for preparing and analysing the samples obtained and for subsequent data analysis. For museum collections where sampling is not an option, he/will carry out analytical screenings using a non-destructive, portable XRF machine.
