The Archaeo- and Palaeoproteomics working group at the University of Tübingen is seeking a post-doctoral candidate focused on establishing ZooMS (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry) reference libraries for southern Africa. Our team studies hominin dispersal and interaction during the Pleistocene, paleoenvironmental dynamics, bone tool technology, and protein preservation across archaeological timescales. We have a particular focus on the study of fragmented bones, which typically cannot be identified morphologically and may contain rare human and faunal remains that are key to our understanding of the archaeological record. The ZooMS in Southern Africa Project aims to expand the ZooMS reference library to this region which will benefit from these methods for taxonomic identification of osseous material. The post-doctoral researcher will generate novel collagen peptide markers for small, medium, and large mammals from reference material supplied through the University of Tübingen’s zooarchaeological reference collection and museums within southern Africa. Additionally, the researcher will have the opportunity to test the newly established reference library on Middle and Later Stone age sites currently under excavation by the University of Tübingen. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the University of Tübingen, Germany, the Ditsong National Museum, South Africa and the National Research Center on Human Evolution (CENIEH), Spain.
