The post-holder will be the principal archaeological object specialist in the UKRI funded REMADE project (Roman and Early Medieval Alloys Defined, research.reading.ac.uk/remade). We are working with key partners from across UK heritage to create the first comprehensive overview of copper-alloy metallurgy across the first millennium AD. To achieve this, we are chemically analysing several thousand objects, and are linking these results to regional object sequences, findspots and local stories. Therefore, we are looking to recruit someone with: Proven experience of UK heritage; Expert knowledge of small finds and Roman and Medieval archaeology; Familiarity with working with different types of organisations (such as units, museums, and universities). The appointee will work alongside archaeologists, museum curators, and chemists to develop new stories about Roman and Early Medieval life in the UK. They will provide advice and support on liaising with project partners, including identifying key objects for analysis, seeking permission to sample, and recording assemblages. No previous experience of metal chemistry is necessarily required, instead we are looking for an enthusiastic specialist to bring fresh perspectives on how to interrogate complex datasets, communicate new stories, and engage with heritage.
