The ARCREATE project offers a novel approach to understanding technological and social change during turbulent times in central and southern Africa. Archaeology’s grand narratives about Bantu migrations, largely derived from studies of ceramics, ignore the creative knowledges of the artisans who made ceramic objects that the archaeologists studied. The postdoctoral candidate will be part of the project’s core team and will contribute to its main objectives together with the team. In collaboration with the PI the candidate will manage the project’s Work Package “WP2 Learning Lab”. A key component is the handling of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing techniques, and statistical analysis and visualization. WP2 Learning Lab explores landscape interaction at various scales and is responsible for the geoarchaeological infrastructure of the project: the archaeological and linguistic mapping of sites and their surrounding landscapes, including their ecology, geology and mineralogy, and maintaining the digital infrastructure needed for documentation and data collection in the project. The candidate should apply with their own project proposal and while open for the successful candidate to define, the proposed research project must be within the scope of WP2 Learning Lab and correspond with the overall framework of ARCREATE.
