Applications are invited from highly motivated and qualified candidates for a research grant of a postdoc entitled: "Taxonomic discrimination of Palaeolithic bone remains through Palaeoproteomics", within the team coordinated by Prof. Stefano Benazzi, at the Department of Cultural Heritage, University of Bologna. This multidisciplinary project aims to investigate the presence of Homo from specific archaeological levels of the Late Mousterian through the identification of fragmentary bone remains, mostly indeterminable, using MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry, in order to understand the bio-cultural dynamics that occurred during the Sapiens-Neanderthal replacement in Italy. The candidate will be required to analyze bone and dental fragments through collagen extraction using the ZooMS (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry) method, and obtain sex estimation from protein data. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to utilize pre-screening techniques for the bone samples (e.g. through Near-Infrared Spectroscopy).
