The research project “Fashioning Sudan. Archaeology of Dress along the Middle Nile” investigates the rich corpus of archaeological textiles and animal skins excavated in Sudan and Nubia and dated from the Bronze Age to the Late Medieval Period. The project merges different academic approaches (archaeology, textile & animal skin research, palaeoproteomics, and socio-cultural theory) to develop an interdisciplinary study of garments and highlight the entanglement of dress practices in the fabric of society. The successful postdoctoral candidate will focus on the animal species used during this long period and large territory to produce textile and skin garments, while contributing to the overall research aims of Fashioning Sudan. The main methods used will be archaeology and palaeoproteomic analyses, with the dual aim of identifying animal species and understanding the role of garment production in wider animal husbandry practices. While most of the activities will be hosted at the Centre for Textile Research, in the Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, the palaeoproteomic analyses will be conducted in collaboration with the Globe Institute, in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. This postdoctoral position therefore truly sits – in approach and day-to-day activities – at the intersection between natural sciences and the humanities.
