The Field Museum in Chicago seeks a Postdoctoral Scientist in archaeometry to advance research on LA-ICP-MS of archaeological materials in the Field Museum’s Elemental Analysis Facility (EAF). The EAF conducts compositional analysis, including major, minor, and trace elements, of a large range of materials in a minimally destructive manner to address questions related to the archaeology of cultural production, interaction, and exchange in the Americas, Africa, Oceania, Europe, and Asia. It also advances the cause of material conservation of The Field Museum's renowned anthropology collections. Instrumentation at the EAF includes an inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) dedicated mostly to the analysis of solid artifacts sampled with laser ablation. Three lasers are available. One of the lasers is dedicated to the sampling of small objects with a high throughput, whereas the second laser, a totally unique, custom-transformed apparatus, accommodates large objects. Our most recent acquisition is a portable laser.
