For our DFG/AHRC funded project “Roman melting pots: Tracing food residues and cultural diversity in a frontier zone” we are looking to hire a postdoctoral researcher to join the research group of Prof. Simon Hammann at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg. In this project we seek to investigate the culinary evidence for how migrants to Roman Britain adapted to their new lives in the Roman frontier province. This will be achieved by large-scale analysis of pottery both in terms of their morphology and typology as well as detailed molecular and isotopic characterization of preserved lipid residues through hyphenated high resolution mass spectrometry (GC-QToF MS and LC-timsTOF MS) as well as isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to lead the development and execution of data analysis strategies applied to categorical/typological data of pottery in conjunction with high resolution mass spectrometry and stable isotope data.
