The post doc will work on the ERC - funded project FELIX to conduct paleogenomic analyses on cats froma Asia. The goal to generate and analyze genome- wide data from historic and prehistoric speciments to reconstruct the dispersal of domestic cats with humans, admixture events between wild and domestic cat populations and selective precesses in the past.

Applications are invited for a Research Scientist position as part of the two-year project “CROPREVIVE: mapping underutilised crops in Ireland – past, present and future”. There has been a significant reduction in crop diversity globally, which has serious implications for food security. By merging data from archaeology and plant sciences, CROPREVIVE will investigate the deep history of crop diversity in Ireland and seek resilient modern varieties of crops for future sustainable production. This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of an international, interdisciplinary team tackling a global societal challenge (PI: Assoc. Prof. Meriel McClatchie; Co-PI: Dr Sónia Negrão ). The Research Scientist will merge datasets from Archaeology and Agronomy, undertake data analyses (including statistical analyses) and contribute to a report on findings. The Research Scientist will also engage in stakeholder consultation and outreach activities. Training will be provided in outreach activities, including mapping of data.

The project Building in New Lands funded by Kone Foundation invites applications for the position of postdoctoral researcher in Archaeobotany. The project “Building in New Lands: Phoenician sustainable architecture and environmental adaptation along the Mediterranean Sea” affiliated with the Centre of Excellence in Ancient Near Eastern Empires is pleased to announce a fixed-term research fellowship concentrated on archaeobotany and micromorphology. This project investigates Mediterranean Iron Age earthen architecture, specifically mudbricks, as integral part of material culture. The study aims to examine changes in architectural form and technology alongside the reconstruction of technological and social processes of earthen materials manufacture and construction. This call is particularly targeted to archaeobotanist who are familiar with phytoliths and macroremains analyses of building materials. Applications from scholars wishing to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries, such as Archaeology, Anthropology, Heritage studies and geoscience, are particularly encouraged.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research associate/fellow to work as part of a team on a Leverhulme Trust funded project ‘Integrated ClimAte Resilience UnderStanding (ICARUS) Belize’. The project will develop and apply an approach that integrates climate information drawn from instrumental records, community experience, historical accounts and palaeoenvironmental (including archaeological) data to enable a deeper understanding of resilience to extreme climate events in Belize, with the overall objective of building improved resilience in future. The role of this post holder will be to undertake a desk-based review of the palaeoenvironmental and archaeological literature relating to Belize and the adjacent areas of Mexico and Central America using available databases (e.g. WoS) to develop a project bibliography. They will then analyse, interpret and synthesise information from these sources focusing on evidence for 1) climate change (including extreme events such as droughts and hurricanes), 2) changes in natural vegetation, landcover and landuse, and 3) human responses to climate change including changes in diet and nutrition, changes in traditional practices, abandonment or structural changes in settlements and changes in water management practices. The role holder will be expected to work closely with other members of the project team working on developing understanding of extreme climate events, responses and resilience using a range of methods and disciplinary perspectives.

The successful candidate will assume a computational biologist/data scientist position and will work closely with scientists in the lab studying DNA from human remains up to 20,000 years ago. Under limited supervision, this role is responsible for computational data analysis of the assigned project. Collaborates and consults with researchers and scientists to analyze problems, recommend technology-based solutions, and design computational strategies for a project. Contributes to the design, development, implementation, and testing of bio-computing tools. Ability to communicate analyzed data to analysts writing scientific papers.
