You will examine the utility of stable isotope ratios of hydrogen (δD) of individual fatty acids extracted from a series of Neolithic ceramic vessels from sites in Northern and Southern Europe. You will develop a new cutting-edge technique for improving the resolution of determining pottery use, particulary for resolving mixtures of animal fats. You will work closely with the other students working on residue analysis of these assemblages. A hydrogen isotopes also record environmental conditions, you will explore the results between these different regions to examine the utility of this approach as a provenance tool.
