As part of the HUMAN ORIGINS Cluster of Excellence project “Occupational Intensity and Impact on Cave Ecosystems during the Middle Paleolithic at Hohle Fels, SW Germany” a position is available at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen for a PhD candidate. The main goal of this PhD project is to reconstruct Neanderthal use of domestic space within Hohle Fels Cave and to investigate how intensive use of the site during periods of the Middle Paleolithic may have impacted the cave ecosystem. The candidate will employ geoarchaeological techniques, including micromorphology, to reconstruct general site formation processes and integrate micromorphological and microcontextual analyses with ongoing zooarchaeological analysis to assess variation in occupational intensity and site use. Furthermore, the candidate will employ sedimentary aDNA to assess diachronic variation in fauna, flora and microbial communities throughout the Middle Paleolithic sequence.
