This project will work with ancient and modern samples of oak (Quercus sp.) to assess the influence of human activities on genetic diversity of this keystone species. Using the exceptional preservation of timber on Scottish crannogs, this PhD project will explore forest histories through ancient DNA and apply this new knowledge to the conservation and restoration of oak dominated woodland in the country.
