Applicants must hold a Master’s or equivalent degree in archaeological sciences, genetics, microbiology, biology, bioinformatics or a related field. The ideal applicant will have knowledge in molecular biology, microbial genetics and a genuine interest in human history. Previous experience in the analysis of next generation sequencing data is not a mandatory requirement but will be considered an advantage. In addition, the candidate should have good communication skills, in order to work in a highly collaborative and international environment, as well as very good command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of German is appreciated, but is not a strict requirement. The successful applicant will work on an interdisciplinary project focusing on high-resolution ancient metagenomic analysis to investigate pathogen presence in medieval and post-medieval archaeological sites. The candidate will investigate ancient DNA from a range of human-associated microbes that contributed to past population health and disease, with aim to deepen our understanding of their evolutionary history and impact on past societies.
