We search for a recognised researcher to undertake new research on the use of terraces to identify past crops and terrace management.
The land use of terraces has often been inferred, through different sources, rather than scientifically determined. Whilst this approach is valid it does not tell much about the actual use or multiple use of specific terrace systems. Methods such as pollen and plant macrofossils are generally inappropriate due to the oxidising environment. However, phytoliths, which are mineralized plant remains, are often preserved. Although phytoliths have been used to identify agricultural practices, few studies have been conducted on terrace soils.
